Hazardous waste

For any chemical that cannot be disposed of down the drain or neutralized in the acid waste neutralization system, you must collect it to be disposed of through EHS. Always check the SDS before working with any chemicals.

What Can Go Down the Drains?

• Liquid and water soluble
• Easily biodegradable or can be treated by the AWN
• Salt solutions with low toxicity
• Dilute
• Compounds containing the following can be disposed of in the drain
• Cations: Aluminum, Calcium, Iron, Hydrogen, Potassium, Lithium, Magnesium, Sodium, Ammonium, Tin, Strontium, Titanium, Zirconium

What Should NOT go Down the Drain?

• Oils, greases, petroleums, or any waste that is NOT water soluble
• Flammables (immiscible in water) - such as solvents
• Chemicals above 75°C
• Toxic chemicals such as carcinogens, mutagens, teratogens
• Chemicals that are hazardous to aquatic life even after neutralization
  • Tetramethylammonium hydroxide
  • Gold etch
  • Chromium etch
• Metallic ions and salts from heavy metals in solution
  • Include the following: Arsenic, barium, boron, cadmium, chromium, copper, cyanide, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, zinc
• Organic compounds including anything containing chlorine
